PULSED ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD THERAPY (PEMF)

WHAT IS PEMF THERAPY?

PEMF therapy involves using a device that delivers a series of pulsating magnetic frequencies into the body. We know that the voltage of a healthy cell is about 70-110 millivolts and when we get sick or injured the voltage drops below 50 millivolts or less and cancer cells are 30 millivolts or less. PEMF frequencies create a penetrating energy that re-energizes damaged cells by inducing electrical charges within the cell that restore it to its normal healthy state. It’s like a battery recharger for the human cell. Because of this, cellular metabolism is boosted, blood cells are regenerated, circulation is improved and oxygen carrying capacity is increased. PEMF therapy can reduce pain and improve the quality of your life by allowing your body to function as it was designed to do. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PEMF THERAPY?

  • It is great for wound healing, pain and tissue swelling.  PEMF therapy treats the cellular source of swelling by recharging the cells with a mild electromagnetic current. This stops the release of pain and inflammatory mediators, reduces inflammatory fluids and allows an increase in blood flow to help the cells heal faster by reducing swelling, pain, and inflammation.

  • It reduces the effects of stress on the body and platelet adhesion.

  • It improves energy, circulation, blood and tissue oxygenation and sleep quality.

  • It increases the uptake of nutrients, cellular detoxification and the ability to regenerate cells.

  • It balances the immune system and stimulates RNA and DNA.

  • It accelerates the repair of bone and tissue.

  • It relaxes muscles.

  • It stimulates the acupuncture points and meridians for more complete healing.

HOW PEMF THERAPY CAN BE USED IN DENTISTRY?

  • It can reduce healing time after root canal therapy, tooth extractions or any dental surgery.

  • Some people have muscle or TMJ problems in everyday life or after dental treatment.  PEMF therapy can help alleviate this discomfort.

  • Sometimes after dental work there are some patients who just don’t feel good.  This can be because having dental work done causes blockage and backup of the lymphatic system.  PEMF therapy can help increase lymphatic drainage after dental work.

  • It increases healing of cavitations in the jaw when used in conjunction with ozone therapy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What does a PEMF treatment feel like?

A:  It is never painful and can actually feel good and promote short-term relaxation.  A mild electric-like pulsation is felt over the area being treated and the intensity is always adjusted for individual comfort.

Q: How long does a treatment session last and how many sessions should I have?

A: Due to the strength of the magnetic field produced by our machine treatment time is usually 30 minutes.  Most patients will need between 5-10 hours of total PEMF therapy for a lasting healing effect.  Many patients will feel remarkably better after their first or second session.  This does not mean they have healed, it indicates that the swelling and inflammation has decreased.  It is recommended that for most patients to plan on having 3 sessions per week.  If a bone is broken then you would need to have 5 sessions per week.

Q: Can I use the PEMF machine for non-dental related problems?

A:  For our patients we do allow you to use the machine for non-dental related problems such as broken bones, sore muscles, sprains or to reduce chronic body inflammation.

Q:  Are PEMF treatments safe and are there any contraindications?

A:  Thousands of PEMF treatments have been safely given in Europe over the past 40 years.  Bone stimulators have been used in the US for over 20 years and the FDA approved PEMF technology in this country in 2004 for pain relief, supporting injury and wound healing, etc.  Contraindications are pregnant women and persons with implanted cardiac pacemakers.

Q:  Will dental or health insurance cover the PEMF treatments?  What is the cost for this treatment?

A:  No, even though they are extremely safe and cost effective, dental or health insurance policies do not currently cover PEMF treatments.  Cost for a 30min session is $50.00,  a package of 6- 30min sessions is $275.00,  a package of 12- 30min sessions is $550.00 and a package of 24- 30min sessions is $1100.00.
